From the Road

Ever hear someone try to explain away a lack of correspondence with the lame excuse "I've been busy"? Well, lame as it may be, it's why there was no "From The Road" for March or April. So here we are with a dossier on our comings and goings for the last TWO months.

We only performed once during March, a house concert at the home of John and Pam Daly, in Channel Islands Beach, California. About 50 people saw us perform "TFA" (our term for "unplugged") with our bass buddy, Robbie Harrington, in tow. Many of the Dalys' friends came to see us for the first time, strictly on their recommendation. Among the evening's surprises were "Maybe Later", which we seldom perform, and "When The Lights Go Down", from our upcoming release.

We spent most of the last two months finishing songs for our new record. With five songs already in the can, we only needed seven more. The process, however, dragged on, but we're pleased with the results. We went back into the studio April 28 and should be done by the end of May. Look for an August release for the still untitled collection.

On April 13, we flew to Portland, OR, for a private show at Berbatti's Pan to celebrate the 50th birthday of Dennis Constantine, Program Director of Portland's KINK-FM. Dennis has long been one of our best friends at radio, and it was great to get the chance to help him celebrate. Other performers flew in, including Sara Hickman, Ron Sexsmith and David Wilcox. The whole affair was a veritable love-in of good music, good friends and good food. We dedicated the debut performance of a new song to Dennis, called (appropriately) "HBD2U". We all played songs from our various albums, and Sara stole the show with a sultry rendition of "Happy Birthday Mr. Program Director" ala Monroe.

April 25th we performed live at Tower Records in Pasadena, CA, to promote "Folk Scene Live", a new compilation CD with live performances by 13 artists, including us, David Wilcox, Bruce Cockburn, Maura O'Connell, Dar Williams, Richard Thompson, Mary Black, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Dillon O'Brian, Dave Alvin, Tish Hinajosa, John Gorka and Iris Dement. The CD celebrates Folk Scene's 28 years on KPFK-FM L.A., hosted by Roz and Howard Larman. If your local record store doesn't stock the CD, ask them to order it. You won't be sorry.

The next evening we performed live on Roz & Howard's program for nearly an hour. It was our third appearnace on their show since 1994. We unveiled two more new songs, "Beyond The Pale" and "Weight of the World" and may include those performances on an upcoming fanclub tape.

As we said, we're working feverishly on the new CD and look to be finished by the end of May. We'll post lyrics from the new record here as soon as they are recorded! We hope you will like where we are heading this time.

Love, Dan & Eric
